War of 1812 doc to be pre-screened at Brock

Sunday’s preview one of just four before PBS airing

A historic battle that took place in Niagara’s own backyard will be on the big screen at Brock this weekend.
Niagara residents have the opportunity to preview WNED’s The War of 1812 at Brock University on Sunday, Sept. 25, at 2 p.m. at David S. Howes Theatre. The advanced showing of the two-hour documentary, presented by the Niagara 1812 Bicentennial Legacy Council, is one of just four previews happening in North America, with the others taking place in Washington, Baltimore and Ottawa.
The film, narrated by Joe Mantegna, is scheduled to air on PBS stations nationwide on October 10, at 9 p.m., but the advanced screening gives history buffs a chance to see the film first.
“Niagara is 1812,” said Legacy Council CEO Brian Merrett. “We have been anxiously waiting to see WNED’s film and when we got the opportunity to host a preview-screening, we jumped on it.”
Merrett said this is a way of bringing Niagara residents out to “ignite the excitement” that has been building with the 1812 celebration efforts.

“This film will certainly spark that 1812 interest when it airs nationwide, as well,” he said.
The two-hour film, which combines the visuals of dramatic re-enactments and vivid animation, along with expert interviews from Niagara historians, authors and professors was entirely filmed in the Niagara region.
The Brock screening is open to the public. Tickets cost $10 and are available through the Centre for the Arts’ Box Office in person or by calling 905-688-5550, ext. 3257. Tickets can also be purchased online at www.discover1812.com for pickup at the box office on the day of the event.
The screening will be followed by a wine tasting of Palatine Hills Estate’s new 1812 vintages.
Doors open at 1 p.m. and the film begins at 2. Proceeds from the event go towards the Legacy Council’s marketing efforts and events for the Niagara Region and Niagara Frontier.
