Feds fund War of 1812 exhibit (Brant)

BRANT NEWS, October 14, 2011

The federal government is investing more than $100,000 to help the Woodland Cultural Centre raise awareness about the role of the Six Nations Confederacy in the War of 1812.

The funding, announced by Brant MP Phil McColeman on Friday, will allow the centre to create and present an exhibit that will be on display to coincide with War of 1812 bicentennial commemorations.

“The 200th anniversary of the War of 1812 is an opportunity for all of us to take pride in our history,” McColeman said in a media release. “It is a great pleasure to be here today to announce our government’s investment in this exhibition, which will increase awareness about this important anniversary for Canada.”

The government will provided funding of $113,700 over two years through the Museums Assistance Program.

“This exhibit will expose the Canadian public to the unknown contributions and role the Haudenosaunee warriors played in the War of 1812,” said Janis Monture, executive director of the Woodland Cultural Centre.

“The contribution by the Haudenosaunee warriors both in the United States and in Canada is an unheard and unacknowledged history that caused great strife within the Six Nations Confederacy.”
