Visitors entering Old Town next spring will be left with little doubt that 2012 is a significant year for the area.
The Queen-Mississauga Street Floral Display for 2012 will inform all that see it of the Bicentennial of the War of 1812.
Each year, the Town of Niagara-on-the-Lake accepts requests from community organizations to have special anniversaries or milestones marked through the floral display. For 2011, it was the Shaw Festival’s 50th anniversary that was displayed. This year, according to the staff report presented during Monday night’s parks and recreation advisory committee meeting, the Town received two letters requesting use of the space. One from the 1812 Bicentennial Committee requesting the bicentennial of the War of 1812 be recognized for 2012, 2013 and 2014. The other letter was from the Niagara Foundation requesting recognition of its 50th anniversary.

At the suggestion of Town staff, councillors approved the 1812 display for the 2012 season only. The Bicentennial Committee were invited to apply again in 2013 and 2014, but staff stated others can still apply for those years.

The Bicentennial Committee will provide the signage and the parks and recreation department will provide plant material and ongoing maintenance.
