Flames over Niagara to light up Fort Erie waterfront

NIAGARA FALLS REVIEW
Dec. 9, 2011

Two nations will come together and the flames will fly high Saturday night as part of a War of 1812 commemoration event.

Saturday's Flames Over Niagara event, organized by Fort Erie's 1812 bicentennial committee, will see bonfires lit on both sides of the Niagara River to commemorate the wartime burnings of what are now Buffalo and Niagara-on-the-Lake and to celebrate the nearly 200 years of peace since the war ended in 1814.

In Fort Erie and Buffalo, fires will be lit at the same time, directly across from each other between 6 and 8 p.m. The fires will be lit at the Jarvis St. coal docks in Fort Erie and Squaw Island in Buffalo, beside the International Railway Bridge.

Flames Over Niagara is organized by 1812 military re-enactment groups and historical groups on both sides of the border. It is the only bi-national coordinated event that will be held during the entire commemorative period. The goal is for every community on both sides of the Niagara River to host their own bonfire by 2013 in a coordinated event, so the entire length of the Niagara River will be on fire.
