$1,000 set for best design of commemorative medal

Organizers of local War of 1812 bicentennial events are offering a$1,000 cash prize for the best design of a commemorative medal that depicts the war and the 200 years of peace between the U. S. and Canada that followed.

The Niagara 1812 Bicentennial Legacy Council announced that the winning medal will be given to visiting dignitaries, possibly including President Obama, Canadian Prime Minster Stephen Harper and a member of the British royal family at opening ceremonies in June.

Copies of the medal will be made for further official events during the three-year bicentennial. There also is a$500 prize for the second-place design.

Entries must be submitted by May 15 to Art Ellis of the Medallic Art Society of Canada, located in St. Catharines, Ont. Contest rules are on the society’s website at www.medallicart.ca .
