| NIAGARA FALLS REVIEW By ALISON LANGLEY Representatives from three levels of government in Niagara will come together next weekend to mark the upcoming War of 1812 bicentennial. Niagara Falls Mayor Jim Diodati, MPP Kim Craitor and MP Rob Nicholson will welcome 2012 at a New Year Levee on Jan. 14 at 10 a.m. at the Gale Centre. The levee will offer information on upcoming activities and events leading up to the bicentennial. "It will be a gathering to celebrate 200 years of peace and it will kick off three years of great historical events," the mayor said. Craitor added: "What better way for us as elected officials to kick off the year of the 200th anniversary by doing a levee together," he said. |
The levee is open to the public and will include music, entertainment and food. The three politicians will be dressed in period costumes. Craitor will be wearing an authentic solider's uniform. "It was worn in battle and I'm quite honoured to be able to wear a uniform of a soldier who fought bravely in the War of 1812," he said. A levee is typically a New Year's Day social event. Diodati said the Niagara Falls levee was pushed forward to mid-January to accommodate everyone's schedules. A New Year's Levee was held Jan. 1 at Fort George in Niagara-on-the-Lake. It was the first official event of the three-year bicentennial celebration. Opening ceremonies are planned throughout Niagara to mark the June 18, 1812, declaration of war.
